Asia Cup 2016

The match assumes significance as the winner will take a giant step towards qualifying for the summit clash of the tournament. For Bangladesh, a victory is a must as they have already played two matches winning one and losing against India in the opener.

Both the teams beat minnows UAE in their opening games. Sri Lanka did not need much effort even though the margin of their victory was 14 runs while Bangladesh were more convincing in their 51-run win.  Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe bin Mortaza is singing Mahmudullah’s praises after the all-rounder’s match-winning show against the United Arab Emirates in the Asia Cup here.
Mashrafe insisted the role of the off-spinning all-rounder in the team was pretty clear. Bangladesh were sent in to bat by the UAE but the hosts slipped to 83 for 4 before Mahmudullah walked in at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Friday, reports bdnews24.com.
He kept the sinking ship afloat with a gritty 36 not out, off 27 deliveries, and pushed Bangladesh’s total to a modest 133 for 8 with some late fireworks.Later he picked up two wickets for just five runs in two overs that helped Bangladesh seal a convincing 51—run win. He also took a spectacular catch at point.
“(Mahmudullah) Riyad knows what his role is. He has to bat under pressure most of the time. He has to play with a lot of responsibility especially when the top order does not get runs. He faces a lot of criticism if he can’t give his best,” Mashrafe said.
Mahmudullah coped with the pressure successfully against qualifiers UAE.
“Riyad played a very good innings. It was very important for the team. He is bowling well too nowadays. It will be very good for us if he can keep it up,” said the skipper.Mashrafe also sang Mahmudullah's praises after the all-rounder's match-winning show against the UAE.

he Tigers have been a formidable force at home, but their batting has been below par in fast bowling assistance pitch in Dhaka. Same can be said about the batting of the Lankans, who looked ordinary against UAE. Both sides have a good bowling unit and the battle will focus on that section given their underlying strengths.

The 20-year-old found it tough against India, but got back his shape against UAE.

Asia cup 2016

This time it will be no different. Mustafizur's ability to mix up the deliveries alongside his ability to hit consistency, will be important for Bangladesh. Mustafizur will hope to be confident and produce a fine spell. The left-arm pacer holds the key for the Tigers upfront. He will be hoping to get early wickets and fulfill the role like that of Ashish Nehra or Mohammad Amir in the Indian and Pakistan side respectively.

Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka): Malinga is a world class bowler in the shortest format and showed his brilliance with the ball against UAE. The skipper picked four wickets against the minnows and did what he does best in focussing on bowling full and straight. Malinga's ability to bowl those toe-crushing yorkers will keep the Bangladesh batsman guessing. Malinga will look to get crucial key wickets upfront and use the conditions wisely. A lot will depend on him in order to propel the others in order to chip in as well and a fine start could serve that purpose.Bangladesh lost against India in their opening game and the shoulders of some players dropped after that, but things changed for the hosts as they defeated the UAE quite comprehensively. Bangladesh defeated the UAE by 51 runs, with contributions from Mohammad Mithun, Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah on the batting front while all their bowlers performed well.

"Our confidence was slightly shaken after losing the first game, but the win over the UAE will certainly help us get that back. In fact, it will help that we beat them convincingly, especially ahead of the next game against Sri Lanka," ESPN Cricinfo quoted batsman Sabbir Rahman as saying.

Bangladesh have a decent mix of batsmen and bowlers in their team to outshine Sri Lanka, but they need all their top-order to deliver against the Lankan Lions. One of the major concerns for Bangladesh has been the form of Shakib-Al-Hasan, who has just scored just 3 and 13 runs in the competition. Shakib is one of their best players.

However, in the bowling department, Bangladesh have some top players, including Taskin Ahmed and Mashrafe Mortaza as their fast bowlers. With the pitch having assisted seamers in the competition, Bangladesh have other bowlers, such as Mustafizur Rahman, to look to.

These bowlers are going to be tested by Sri Lanka, who have some good batsmen in their line-up, including Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal, and Angelo Mathews. Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have enough resources in their ranks to counter it, in the likely situation that the conditions remain the same. Bangladesh's four pacers - Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and Al-Amin Hossain - are fast gaining in reputation and will be more than a handful in helpful conditions, as they showed in the game against the United Arab Emirates. Their batting has been the bigger worry with failures in first two games. One of their key members in the unit - Shakib Al Hasan - has a high score of just 20 in his last nine T20I innings. That will be the biggest worry for the skipper. Shakib's failures gain more prominence in the absence of Tamim Iqbal in the line-up. The rest of the batting unit will not find it any easier against Sri Lanka and if Bangladesh are to show any improvement in this format, it is once again Shakib's responsibility to show them the way forward. The think-tank would also be pondering the need to shuffle the batting order a touch to adapt to the conditions. Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim will probably be of more value to them higher up in the order in these conditions. The bowling unit is far more settled and it's unlikely it'll see a change for this game.

Live Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka

Bangladesh are a strong team at home, and can defeat any team on their day. However, they have not played the quality of cricket they are known for at home in the ongoing Asia Cup. Bangladesh need to up their game Sunday as they prepare to face Sri Lanka at Shere Bangla National Stadium.

The home team might heave a sigh of relief as Sri Lanka, like Bangladesh, have not played great cricket in the tournament either. The Lankan Lions had to give it their all against the UAE in their opening game to emerge triumphant. Sri Lanka defeated the UAE by 14 runs.Four games into the Asia Cup 2016 and we are yet to see the big-hitters take the centre stage. This Twenty20 tournament has been a far cry from the norm in the format - not that it has failed to produce compelling cricket. One could even stretch the argument further to perhaps point out that this tournament has given the format itself a different colour. The primary reason for this has been the pitches produced. With more than a tinge of green on all the surfaces so far, teams will be revisiting their playing XI and even strategies to counter this factor.
