According to an ESPNCricinfo report on Saturday (June 18), the 13-team ODI league - believed to comprise the 10 Test playing nations along with Ireland, Afghanistan and Nepal - will see teams play each other over three years, with the top two nations playing a play-off series, constituting either three or five games, to determine the league champion.
The said league could also incorporate the promotion/relegation system with the World Cricket League Championship, the second tier of one-day cricket, with the team finishing bottom of the ODI league at the end of the three-year cycle facing demotion to the lower division.
The ODI format could undergo a huge change should the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) members vote in favour of a proposal to do so in it’s annual general meeting this month in London.
The proposal involves a formation of a new league of 13 teams in order to make 50-over matches more relevant. It could be implemented as soon as in 2019, in which each of the 13 teams would play a 3-match series, either home or away, against each other over a 3-year period. At the end of the period, the top two teams will play the final much like the Test championship.
If implemented, this could see powerhouse nations such as India and Australia play more frequently with the likes of associate nations including Afghanistan and Ireland.
As per the current ICC ODI rankings, 12 teams feature in it. The 13th side could be determined by the winner of the 2015-17 World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) - the second tier of one-day cricket – a competition featuring Netherlands, Scotland, Nepal, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea amongst teams.  The ICC is pushing for the creation of a new ODI league for the world's top 13 countries to give 50-over cricket new context and relevance.
Plans are well-advanced to create a new league from 2019 for 13 nations - believed to be the ten Test teams, Afghanistan, Ireland and one other Associate, with Nepal advocated by some as a favoured option in a debate that still has some way to run.The league will see all countries play each other over three years, with the top two nations playing a play-off series to determine the overall winner of the league.
It is hoped that the proposals will give ODI cricket a new context and sense of purpose, amid fears that the format fits awkwardly between Test and Twenty20 cricket, insufficiently loved either by traditionalists or newer fans.
Under the plans, each team would play a three-match series either home or away against every other country, amounting to 36 ODIs each over a three-year basis. The fourth year of each cycle would be reserved for World Cup preparation.

That was reduced to four off the last ball with Mahendra Singh Dhoni on strike, but he could only bludgeon the ball to deep point and Zimbabwe celebrated a second consecutive victory over India in the 20-over format.
Aside from Chigumbura, Malcolm Waller (30 from 21 balls) and opener Hamilton Masakadza (25 from 15 balls) gave Zimbabwe their highest score against India in Twenty20 cricket.
This is where you have to personally tell them as to ‘this could have been done at that point of time.’ And also that’s how you learn. It is not that you have to commit a mistake to learn.”The loss was a rude shock for the team that steamrolled Zimbabwe in the preceding three ODIs. Dhoni said the result proves every international team needs to be respected.
“It doesn’t matter which team you are playing. It is a levelling experience. What I mean by that is you need to give a lot of respect to cricket and when you go in to bat or bowl in the field, irrespective of the opposition, you have to be at your best.
“You can’t play with your reputation or playing eleven that looks good on paper. What is important is how well you play on the field, how well you are executing. It is the cricket that wins you the games, not the teams. I felt we were way off today, both in the bowling and the batting department,” he added.
The BCCI, on its part, refused to comment, claiming that it is yet to ascertain the exact facts of the issue. "We are keeping a close watch on the development. It is a serious issue. NEW DELHI: India's cricket tour of Zimbabwe was today hit by a massive controversy after an official associated with one of the sponsors of the series was arrested for alleged rape even though he pleaded innocence to the charge.
The storm erupted after the Zimbabwean media reported that an unnamed Indian cricketer had been arrested on charges of rape. The reports stated that India's ambassador to the African nation, R Masakui, had tried to prevent the player's arrest last night at a Harare hotel.
I felt the last ball was brilliant but that is what my job is, so maybe I am the person to finish the job. But at the same time, we kept losing wickets and what happens at that stage is that you are losing wickets and you are giving one dot ball and at the same time, the set batsman is not getting strike.
“I felt the batsmen will have to take the responsibility. The reason being, few of them, they were set, they were batting well. When you are chasing targets, you need to take it to the end and then look to play the shots. That was something that was lacking in this game,” Dhoni pointed out.
The second string squad for the tour was picked in the absence of seniors and Dhoni said the rookie players must make the most of the opportunity. The skipper said he batted at six to give others more time in the middle.

The right-hander is 67 runs shot of reaching the 500-run mark in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League.Should he get there, the Delhi batsman will became the only captain to score over 500 runs in three seasons of the league.

MOHALI:  Wriddhiman Saha hit a scintillating half-century as Kings XI Punjab managed a formidable 181 for 5 against Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League encounter, here tonight.
Wriddhiman's 33-ball-52 which comprised seven boundaries was well-complemented by a 44-ball-52 from Marcus Stoinis after Zaheer Khan put the home team into bat.
The Test specialist, who has had uneventful IPL since the start of the 2015 edition finally got a score of significance after 19 innings. Incidentally, it was his first 50 plus score after his century in the 2014 IPL final.
There were two significant partnerships in the KXIP innings. 58 for the third wicket between Stoinis and Wriddhiman while the Bengal stumper also enjoyed a quickfire 46-run stand in 4.1 overs with Glenn Maxwell (16).

The momentum switched sides again as Shane Watson hammered Perera for five boundaries in the 14th over. Perera was ousted from the attack after conceding 40 off three overs. After a stellar bowling outing with 3 for 24, Watson then raced away to 36 off 12 balls, before being trapped by RP in the 16th over with 49 to get in 27 balls. R Ashwin was introduced into the attack only in the 17th over and bowled only the one for the match after conceding 7.
Zampa, who returned to bowl his final over with figures of 2 for 17, was taken apart by an composed Kohli, for 18 runs, reducing the equation to 22 to get off the final two overs. His show got over after he was declared leg before the wicket off Singh in the 16th over while attempting a big heave.
Meanwhile, Kohli saw to it that the asking rate fell down steadily and swiftly. From an asking rate of 142 runs in 78 balls after the beginning of the match, it fell down to 122 runs needed in 66 balls and 98 in 54 balls and later 77 in 38.
By the end of the 19th over, RCB needed 16 runs off eight ball and four runs off six balls in the final over, Travis Head (6) took a single giving the strike to Kohli.
Excited and entertained fans in the stadium stood up flashing their glowing cell phones to witness the victory coming from Kohli's bat. With one run needed in four balls, Kohli cracked a four to claim the victory.
Adam Zampa 2/35 performed the best with the ball for PSG while R. P. Singh 1/37 was the only other bowler to manage a wicket.
The match, however, turned on its head and in Bangalore's favour as the home side milked 39 runs off two overs -- 20 from 14th bowled by Perera and 19 from the 15th by Bhatia. Watson smashed a hapless Perera for five fours in a scintilalting show of strokemaking. He then hit Bhatia for two sixes as the bowler bled 19 runs.

That brought down the asking rate to 10 an over and immediately Watson was out LBW to Singh in the 16th over.
Ashwin was introduced in the 17th over and he gave away seven runs and after that he was not used as Kohli made the stadium on fire with a flurry of lusty blows to take the game away from Pune.
Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane and Saurabh Tiwary smashed half centuries to power Pune to an imposing 191 for six after being put into bat.
While opener Rahane made 74 off 48 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes, Tiwary's 52 came off 39 balls during which he struck nine boundaries.
Yazuvendra Singh Chahal was the only bowler for Bangalore to pick up the lone wicket as Usman Khawaja who was run out for 16 runs off six balls with two boundaries and a six.
Pune had a poor start as Khawaja lost his wicket when the score was 26 on the board in 2.2 overs.
The dismissal, however, brought together Rahane and Tiwary, who played sensibly and took the bowling apart when required as they hit some exquisite shots to put together 106 runs for the second wicket.

Man-of-the-match Kohli is the first batsman to hit two centuries in a single IPL edition until now. He reached his century in style with a six at the end of the 19th over in paceman R.P. Singh's bowling. His century came in 52 balls with seven fours and seven sixes at the Chinnaswami Stadium.

This will be a battle of nerves between a batsman who has been one of the top run-scorers in the tournament, and two talented fast bowlers. Praveen relies more on his good line and length while Kulkarni is adept in swinging the ball with pace variation. If any of these two bowlers (who will ideally share the new ball), send the in-form de Kock back to the dugout early on in the innings, it will build some serious pressure on the Daredevils. This is very much a possibility, it happened in the last match. On the flip side, if de Kock gets his eye in then Lions have to be ready for some serious hammering from the southpaw.

Shreyas Iyer vs Dhawal Kulkarni: Shreyas is a very talented batsman but somehow he has not been able to pack the same punch which he did in Ranji Trophy 2015-16. He can certainly perform in T20 cricket as well since his scoring rate is phenomenal. Kulkarni with his shrewd outswingers will try to get the better of Shreyas. If he survives the first few overs and gets going, things might get difficult for the Lions, but at this moment Kulkarni is not just swinging the ball well but even having a good control over it.

Gujarat Lions' three-match winning streak came to an end yesterday after losing to Kings XI by 23 runs in the ongoing ninth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).But despite the loss, Gujarat Lions continue to enjoy the top spot in the table with 12 points from eight games.
The ever-improving Daredevils are not far behind as they are placed third with eight points from six games.
Gujarat Lions batting so far has revolved around explosive openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith. When the duo clicked, the Lions have managed to achieve scores around 200.
Both McCullum and Smith had a rare off day yesterday and the duo would be hoping to return among runs come tomorrow.
Skipper Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik made useful contributions at the middle even though they failed against Kings XI yesterday, but their main worry would be the batting form of two all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja.
Bravo and Jadeja have been handy for Raina with the ball but it is their performance with the bat which is a matter of concern.

On Monday, Dravid and Upton sat in a restaurant in the team hotel and had one-on-one interactions, resembling personal appraisals, with every player for a few minutes. According to Sam Billings, who scored 54 off 34 balls against KKR, the exchange created an environment where even young players like Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer could approach them without hesitation and express themselves.
Upton was popular during his tenure as India’s mental conditioning coach.
“As a young international player from overseas to have an environment to come into which is great for confidence, to go out and play your natural game, in a short competition it is invaluable,” Billings said on Monday.The 24-year-old England player said Dravid has been helping players to become mentally tougher and read the game better, which can be the difference in this format.
“He’s been teaching us when you have got to sit in (curb your shots) for a little bit and when to attack.”
The inputs should be invaluable to someone like Iyer, who after being the highest Ranji Trophy run-scorer for Mumbai last season, has hit a rough patch, scoring 22 runs in five innings.
“He (Dravid) told me I need to open up my shoulder a bit more for seamers so that I can keep my head steady,” said Iyer when asked if Dravid was helping him with technique.

Now, both the openers are gone. Smith perishes, looking to smash the spinner out the park. Morris takes an easy catch at long-on. Two new batsmen -- Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch -- at the crease. And, he strike again, OUT! Finch's stay at the middle is short -- tries to sweep Nadeem's arm ball but only manages to get top edge. Pant takes a simple one at short fine leg. A dream start for DD here.
Middle-Order: Considering the previous game of GL, it was the middle-order that got the trick done. Top-order crashed and burned against KXIP but in their earlier game against DD , the top-order played a major role in their win. Dinesh Karthik has been valuable, contributing  30-40 runs in most of the games, which has been enough to keep the momentum going. Ravindra Jadeja could be fiery with his batting skills when needed, though that moment is yet to be witnessed in this season. As for Dwayne Bravo, the all-rounder is an hard-hitter although known for his bowling skills so far in IPL 9 he would want to bat well. Bravo managed to scalp just the wicket of JP Duminy against DD in the first game.
James Faulkner can get a call to bat up the order, after his crucial 32 off 27, which included 4-fours in the last match.  Complimenting him well was India U-19 skipper Ishan Kishan. All in all the middle-order can be the cover if the top-order breaks.

Zak strikes! McCullum's made a mess of that one, an error in judgment there -- he's misread the length on that one. He tries to pull one that wasn't that short and misses it. Terrific start for the old workhorse -- only three runs and the all-important wicket of McCullum.

Chris Morris to bowl. He's getting it swing both sides and Smith's taking up the challenge. He's flicked an incoming one through the vacant midwicket region for a four and follows that with a nice-looking drive. That was a slower one too. GL openers get a move on -- nine came off this one.

Nadeem to bowl the first over. The ball's drifting into Smith, here -- no turn off the pitch though. A top delivery to finish the over -- another one that went straight but quicker and hit McCullum, who's camping on the backfoot, on the pads. Also, Axar became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in the ongoing ninth season of the league, achieving the feat against Gujarat Lions at Rajkot.
Mohit Sharma struck twice in the first six overs to dent Lions' chase of 155 against the Murali Vijay-led Punjab.
Bowling the seventh over, the tall left-arm spinner dismissed explosive West Indian Dwayne Smith on the third delivery before getting rid of Dinesh Karthik and Dwayne Bravo on the fifth and sixth deliveries, respectively. The Lions' batsmen were clueless against Axar's lethal weapon - the arm balls.

Vijay, who kept rotating his bowlers, took Axar off the attack and brought in Stoinis to bowl the ninth over.
However, coming back to bowl the 11th over, Axar sent Ravindra Jadeja walking back to the hut right on the first ball to complete his hat-tick.

A target of 155 did not seem to be a challenging one for GL who had so far steam-rolled their opposition en route to the top spot in the points tally, but on a Rajkot track that had just enough purchase for the spinners, the Suresh Raina-led side were undone by the left-arm spin Axar to crash to only their second defeat in seven matches.
It was the Indian pacer Mohit Sharma (3/32) who laid the foundation for the successful defence with the wickets of Brendon McCullum (1) and Raina (18) upfront, before Axar swooped in with a three-wicket over, that included the scalps of Dwayne Smith (15), Dinesh Karthik (2) and Dwayne Bravo (0). Yet that was not the hat-trick. After removing Karthik and Bravo off the fifth and sixth deliveries of the seventh over, Axar came back to bowl the 11th and off the first ball, he sent back Ravindra Jadeja (11) to effectively end the chase for GL. James Faulkner and Ishan Kishan (27) tried to get their team back on track, but Axar's spell of 4-0-21-4 had not just stopped the GL innings in its track, but had derailed it beyond repair.

It's fair to say Vijay has turned it around for Punjab. The newly-appointed skipper led from the front with the bat and scored a 41-ball 55 to take Punjab to 155, which looked a nothing score for Gujarat before their batters stepped on the field. However, Mohit Sharma and Axar Patel picked up seven wickets between them to hand Gujarat a thrashing. Axar picked up the first hat-trick of the season as well. One of the rarest days on which Gujarat Lions batting has failed to fire. Kings XI were pumped up today and should look to carry forward today's good work. (Points Table)

After Vijay 41-ball 55-run knock had helped KXIP overcome their usual middle-order wobble to post a total of 155 - that seemed 15-20 runs less than a par total - it was imperative for KXIP to put in a special effort, but with GL opener Smith tonking Sandeep Sharma for a four and six in the first over, it was far from the start KXIP would have hoped for. But, Mohit provided the opening by rattling McCullum's middle stump in the second over. Sharma's plan of bowling stump-to stump line worked again when another middle stump rattle signalled the demise of GL skipper Raina. GL were on the backfoot, but with an in-form middle-order to follow, they would have fancied their chances.
